Recipients of Minnesota have many reasons to look forward to London Olympics in the year 2012. National trials to select athletes who shall represent America in the Olympics will take place soon and preparation is going on in full swing amongst the athletes in Minnesota to make sure the healthy sporting tradition of the city and state remains strong.

Of course, the athletes will be facing tough competition from athletes from other states as well. However, the fact that sports is an integral part of the life of residents of Minnesota makes one hopeful that a sizable chunk of the contingent will be selected from this city. Followers of wrestling, boxing and other such contact sports have a lot to look forward to as athletes from the city are considered top contenders for the few spots available to represent the country in the Olympics.

Other sports where Minnesotans are considered strong contenders include woman’s basketball, track and field events, equestrian events and diving. In all, there are very few sporting areas or avenues that have been left untouched by the sports conscious citizens of the state. One advantage that athletes from the city enjoy over others is that they can interact with those who have already enjoyed the distinction of representing America at the Olympics.

The volleyball team is seen as a strong contender because an Olympic gold medalist is coaching it. Of course, it is important to enhance not only the city’s reputation for being a sporting giant but also that it is strictly against use of drugs and other such substances in sports.

To become a sports journalist, complete high school with your focus mainly on English and business-related subjects. Look for a college with a good journalism degree program that offers a wide range of subjects, such as journalism, business, broadcasting, law, ethics, reporting, and editing. Also look for a program that has an emphasis on sports journalism.

Work as an intern to gain as much experience as you can. You can work as an intern at places such as a newspaper, television station, radio station, sports magazine, etc. To start off, you can work as a freelance sports journalist to get some experience and create a portfolio. Also, apply to newspapers and sports magazines whenever you can. Practice as much as possible, even if you are not publishing anything. There is a wide range of the things you can write about in journalism. For example, you can write about a moving company quote.

If you are serious about being a sports journalist, you will want to enroll in a graduate degree program either in English, journalism, writing, or communications. Also, work for your college newspaper so you can get some experience in college. If college is not an option for you, you can start by getting experience in different ways. Go to the library and read all the books you can on journalism and research on the Internet.

Work in internships or other journalism jobs so you can gain experience. It would also be a good idea to write for sports blogs and websites. Contact media groups and sports organizations to find out about available jobs.

A woman celebrating her 93rd birthday was surprised by a huge bouquet of flowers delivered to her, and the card said they were from Elton John himself. Rocket Man had just entertained her the night before, where Harriet Schwenk saw her favorite musician perform from the eighth row of the concert.

Years ago, Schwenk babysat the children of a freelance concert promoter who pulled strings to get her a back-stage tour before the world-famous star arrived. David Van Puffelen, the concert promoter, was given permission by Elton John’s assistant to deliver the flowers to the woman. It isn’t clear how Elton John knew of her or that it was her birthday, but he was touched enough by her presence at his concert that he make this kind effort.

The huge bouquet was half as tall as the 4-foot-7 elderly woman, who took it to her church on Sunday to show all her friends. She was the most popular congregation member that day. Her grand daughter attended the concert with her, both of them being avid Elton John fans.

Elton John was born Reginald Kenneth Dwight in 1947, and he studied music in school growing up. It was no surprise that he began his musical career right upon graduating from the Royal Academy of Music in London, England. His first band, formed in 1961, was called Bluesology, and at the time he changed his given moniker to Elton Hercules John, being inspired by sax player Elton Dean and the band’s front man Long John Baldry.

Ask anyone who lives in or around Duluth, Minnesota about interesting sights, and they’ll tell you about the Northern Rail Hotel. Located just a short drive north of Duluth, this hotel offers something that few others probably do—the opportunity to stay and sleep in an actual train car.

Situated a mere five minutes from the shores of Lake Superior, the Northern Rail Hotel sits comfortably on 160 acres of secluded bliss. You won’t find any of the “city” kind of nightlife or any wild parties around here. What you will find are some of the most popular outdoor activities, and depending on what time of the year you stay at the Northern Rail, these can include everything from mountain biking and snowshoeing to bird watching and hiking. Gooseberry State Park is nearby, too!

The front desk and breakfast areas are situated in a train depot, complete with an enclosed platform that leads you to where you’ll be staying. You have three room options at the Northern Rail. The porter suites consist of a half of a rail car and the king/queen suites span a full car and also include a living room area and fireplace. For those who don’t mind spending a bit more money, there are the yardmaster condos. These boast a king-size bedroom, living room, and a full kitchen, as well as a large electric fireplace and a hot tub. If this last option is of interest, be aware that you have to stay for two nights to be able to book one.

If you’ve grown bored with the normal hotels and amenities, then why not give the Northern Rail hotel a try?

If you consider yourself a history buff or have someone in your family who loves the subject, then be sure to visit the city of Red Wing in Minnesota on your next visit to the state. A little over an hour away from St. Paul, Red Wing is located on the south end of Mud Lake and is situated in both Pierce and Goodhue Counties. With a population of right around 16,000, Red Wing is steeped in history that is sure to interest just about anyone.

Most people who know of Red Wing know about the famous (and still popular) Red Wing boots. In 1905, Charles Beckman founded the manufacturing company known simply as Red Wing and began to sell boots.

So, what’s so special about Red Wing boots? The way the company takes care of you. Red Wing doesn’t sell boots through a website, as they believe in custom-fitting, which means they want you to come in and get measured. When you buy a pair of famous Red Wing boots, the company promises to take care of them for as long as you have them. You can have them relaced, carefully cleaned, and if you want, they’ll even fix the eye holes for you. That’s pretty amazing customer service.

Red Wing’s boots aren’t the only interesting thing in the city. There are plenty of activities to partake in, such as boat or canoe trips, camping, hiking, walking along the Mississippi, and there are even plenty of shopping opportunities. The neighboring towns help make Red Wing and the surrounding area one of the most beautiful and relaxing areas in Minnesota.

Bloomington, Minnesota is home to one of the world’s biggest mall complexes in the Mall of America. With over five floors and 500 different stores, the complex is any shopper’s dream. Retail stores and restaurants aren’t all that can be found inside, though. There’s an underground aquarium, a mini golf course, wedding chapel, a full movie theater, and perhaps the mall’s most popular attraction—Nickelodeon Universe.

So, what exactly is Nickelodeon Universe? An indoor amusement park, of course! Formerly known as SnoopyLand, Nickelodeon Universe has a number of different rides for people of all ages, and if you happen to get a hankering for some good ol’ amusement park food, they’ve got that covered, too!

You have a few different options for admission into the park and onto the rides. If you’d like to be able to ride throughout the day, a wristband can be purchased for $29. If you wait until after 5:00 p.m., the band will cost $20 and you can ride the rides all evening. If you’ll only be in the park for a short time, you can purchased packets of ride tickets. Rides tend to use anywhere between three and six tickets, so keep this in mind when deciding between tickets or wristbands.

Rides at Nickelodeon Universe range from Diego’s Rescue Rider and the Nick O Round for smaller children to rides like the Log Chute Water Ride, The Fairly Odd Coaster, the SpongeBob Square Pants Rock Bottom Plunge, and The Avitar Airbender for adolescents and teenagers.

If that isn’t enough, many well known Nickelodeon characters can be found throughout the park. Don’t forget to bring your camera!

With the always shifting economy, job layoffs, and the all-around lack of available jobs, many people have begun to cut vacations and weekend getaways from their list of needed items. While you may not be able to visit another state or spend a ton of money, there are still ways to have a vacation and have a good time. The state of Minnesota offers many free activities that can prove fun for every member of the family.

There are various activities to enjoy throughout the summer months. Every Thursday, Nicollet Mall boasts one of the best markets in the state. Everything from locally grown produce and homemade crafts to delicacies from local restaurants is available. Peavy Plaza, which is part of the Mall, is full of beautiful sculptures and is host for many different summer concerts—all free, of course.

Minneapolis is the center of the art scene throughout Minnesota. As such, the city hosts three major art shows each year. The Loring Park Art Festival is one of the largest. If you happen to be in town while this is happening, stop by and take a look at the work from hundreds of local and nationally known artists. You’ll find everything from photography to paintings and sculpture.

If you’re up for a little walking, check out the St. Anthony’s Heritage Trail. Along the trail, you’ll see some of the most historic buildings in the area, including the Our Lady of Lourdes Church and the numerous buildings located on Nicolett Island.

Chicago is often referred to as “The Second City,” but these days Chicago should be referred to as “The Smartest City.” Chicago, just like every other country in the United States, has felt the effects of the economy. By taking a look around this vibrant city, you can see that it, too, has had its share of hard times since the market collapsed in 2007.

The city is broke and its citizens are worried about their financial well-being. The city that has prided itself on taking care of so many by providing jobs has been on a hiring freeze, and the rate of unemployment is through the roof. Chicagoans are struggling, but they’ve decided to do something about it.

Chicago is doing car loan refinancing in record numbers. For many it’s for the simple math equation. They are looking at the money that is coming in and seeing the money that is going out. There are only two ways to deal with the car loan when it is more than you can afford.

One option is to get rid of the car altogether. Usually, this just isn’t a realistic option, though. Many people rely on their cars to get them around town, even in a major public transportation city like Chicago. Another option is a car loan refinance, and the results people are getting from this financially savvy move is fantastic.

For instance, there are plenty of people out there who are finding that just because their income isn’t quite the same, it doesn’t mean that their credit has suffered one bit. They are able to finance and keep the car, but they pay a lower interest rate, which will lower their monthly payment.

Chicago has decided that a financial situation isn’t as bleak if you put in the time to fix it. Refinancing is a way Chicagoans are fixing their own financial problems for now and for the future.

Situated on the Mississippi, St. Croix, and Vermillion Rivers just miles from Minneapolis, the city of Hastings is a must-see place for any history fan. Not only is the city rich in history, but it also offers numerous activities that are sure to please everyone in the family. From historic tours and shopping to hiking and fishing, Hastings can be a great vacation spot.

Afton State Park, which sits right next to the St. Croix River, is chock full of activities for everyone, nature fan or not. There are numerous biking, hiking, and walking trails that wind throughout the park. If you’re visiting in the middle of winter, the trails double as a cross-country skiing course. If you wander down a few of the trails, they’ll lead you to a public beach with some of the most beautiful scenery around.

Downtown Hastings is home to 63 buildings that are registered with the National Register of Historic Places. These include two churches, 33 business buildings, and 28 homes. You can see all of these at your leisure, as all of them can be found on the city maps available from the Hastings Chamber of Commerce. One of the most popular sites to visit is the Fasbender Clinic, which was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.

If you’re a golf fan, there’s something for you in Hastings as well. The area has a multitude of different golf courses, and while you need a membership to get into many of them, there are four public courses that are very popular with tourists. Hidden Greens is considered to be one of the best public courses in Minnesota, and Ricer Oaks Municipal Golf, located a short distance away in Cottage Grove, claims a high rating by Golf Digest.

Aside from Six Flags Great America in Gurney, Illinois and Cedar Point near Sandusky, Ohio, there aren’t very many theme parks located in the Midwest. These two theme parks can get expensive, too, and with the economy still recovering, people are looking for ways to save money everywhere. Saving money doesn’t mean cutting out weekend fun, though.

Shakopee, Minnesota, which is just a short distance from downtown Minneapolis, is home to ValleyFair, a non-expensive amusement park with a little something for everybody.

The park boasts thirteen different rollercoasters with names like Wild Thing, Steel Venom, and Xtreme Swing. For those who aren’t fans of roller coasters, there are some other rides such as Thunder Canyon, which is a smaller water rollercoaster and even a covered waterslide. ValleyFair also offers the traditional fair rides such as the Tilt-A-Whirl, The Scrambler, and a Ferris Wheel, as well as some other water rides.

If you’re planning to take children with you to ValleyFair, there are rides for them, too, including a smaller rollercoaster. Other rides include mini boates in the shape of barrels, as well as a multi-level treehouse and a ball pit.

Be aware that, while admission to the park and rides is cheaper that the larger amusement parks, the price of food can be a bit pricey. Meals for a group of four will generally cost anywhere between $20 and $40, so if you don’t want to spend that much, either eat before heading to the park or eat afterward. If you’re not up for an entire meal and would just like a snack or something sweet, there are vendors throughout the park that sell items such as cotton candy, caramel apples, and a variety of ice cream treats.

The Mall of America, located in Bloomington, Minnesota, is one of the largest malls in the entire world. It offers something of interest for just about everybody, housing over 500 different retail stores, a wedding chapel, a full movie theater, a challenging miniature golf course, an indoor amusement park, and one of the most popular attractions—the Underwater Adventures Aquarium. This underground aquarium is home to numerous exhibits and is sure to be a hit with everyone in the family, regardless of age.

You’ll see plenty throughout the aquarium, but the very first exhibit after you enter will introduce you to the aquatic life that is native to the state of Minnesota, which includes a variety of fish, snakes, and turtles. You can also read about the lakes and rivers located throughout the state.

The central part of the Underwater Adventures includes a tunnel made entirely of glass. In this exhibit, you’ll be able to see everything from sharks to schools of tropical fish to a variety of stingrays, making for some great photo opportunities. Be aware that the tunnel floor moves you along the glass, so make sure you have solid footing. Other smaller exhibits throughout Underwater Adventures showcase smaller species of tropical marine life, such as crabs, a variety of colorful seahorses, jellyfish, and a rather large octopus.

There are a couple different exhibits aimed at children as well, including a Finding Nemo area where fish from the film are housed. There is also an area called the Pirate’s Treasure Box. Because the aquarium is anything but standard, there’s even a ride to go on if you want to.

Throughout the aquarium, there are various exhibits which allow visitors to touch some of the animals. The species you can touch include crabs, starfish, and stingrays. If you enjoy the aquarium that much, you can tour the entire facility, set up a time to scuba dive, and even book a birthday party.

Some people might tell you that the Midwest has some of the most varying weather in the entire United States. Those of us who live in the Midwest would have to agree wholeheartedly. From the subzero temperatures and multiple feet of snow in the winter to the humidity and thunderstorms of the summer, states like Wisconsin and Minnesota have definitely learned how to use those seasons and the accompanying weather to their advantage.

Minnesota holds a number of different festivals throughout the year, regardless of the season. If you’re planning to be in Minnesota at all during any of the following events, make sure you attend the festivals. You’ll see how the mix of midwestern weather can be more than fun.

For eleven days in late January, the St. Paul Winter Carnival attracts thousands of people willing to brave the cold temperatures for a little fun. Since 1886, the people of Minnesota have been participating in activities like ice and snow sculpting, ice skating, and even a traditional Native American pow wow with one of the local tribes. One of the most popular events at the carnival is the Torchlight Parade, which occurs at night through the streets of St. Paul.

In mid-July, Minneapolis is home to the Aquatennial, which pays homage to the many waterways in Minnesota. Since 1940, events such as beach volleyball, the triathlon, and the ever-popular fireworks display have been taking place throughout the city. Along with a huge block party, one of the most popular events of the Aquatennial is the boat race in which contestants create boats from milk cartons.

The Minnesota State Fair is perhaps the biggest event in the state, taking place for twelve days in August. With standard Midway rides, the Adventure Park for those who like different rides, as well as butter sculptures and Pronto Pups, this is truly an event showcasing everything that makes the state of Minnesota what it is.

Not every vacation you take needs to be packed full of activities that, in the end, just end up running you ragged and possibly leaving you more tired than before you left for vacation. Contrary to popular belief, you can still have a relaxing vacation full of activities that you enjoy, and it doesn’t have to be in a big city, another state, or at some exotic beach resort in the Caribbean.

If you want to satisfy the nature lover in yourself or in your family, you can do it and still relax. One of the most beautiful locations in the Midwest is the northeastern corner of Minnesota, right along the border of Canada. This area, consisting of over one million acres of crystal clear lakes and wilderness, is known as the Boundary Waters Canoe Area (or, the BWCA for short). These lands draw over 100 thousand people from every walk of life each year.

The BWCA offers a multitude of outdoor activities and adventures for people of any age. Fishing is one of the most popular activities in the area. With so many lakes and rivers (over 1,000), as well as a multitude of different species of fish, everyone will enjoy the endless opportunities that come along with fishing.

One of the best things that the wilderness provides is numerous lodging options. There are numerous lake-side resorts and places offering your choice of rustic cabins to sleep in. There are also campgrounds where you can park your RV, pitch a tent, or rough it and sleep in a sleeping bag under the stars.

Ely, a smaller town, is only s short distance from the BWCA and offers even more activities. Stop in at the International Wolf Center and learn more about wolves, or walk through an art gallery. If you want to get away from the wilderness for a day, Ely is sure to offer a little something for everybody.

Duluth, Minnesota is known for it’s cold temperatures and fantastic college hockey team, but the city is perhaps most famous for its Railroad Museum, which is located on Michigan Street, just off the shores of Lake Superior. The collections at the museum consist of both steam and diesel engines, as well as street cars and other items. If someone in your family is a fan of old trains, this is the perfect place for him or her.

The first railroad in Minnesota was built in 1862 and ran from the city of St. Paul to St. Anthony, which is now known as Minneapolis. “William Crooks” was the name of the first locomotive in the state, and it was constructed by the Paterson Locomotive Works company. This first engine can be viewed at the museum, as can railcars from companies such as Haskell & Barker.

In 1887, the world’s first snow plow was built by the Leslie Brothers and Cook Locomotive Works and was used by more than one locomotive at a time in order to clear away snowdrifts. This piece of machinery, as well as the McGiffert Log Loader, which was used to place logs onto flatcars, is available for viewing at the Railroad Museum.

In 1890, the Duluth Railway Company introduced the streetcar. These were used to replace the slower horse and buggy carriages. Streetcars ran along wires, which powered them with 600 volts of electricity. They stuck to tracks that ran throughout the towns.

The Railroad Museum in Duluth, Minnesota is full of history in both the numerous displays of ages-old machinery, but also in the explanations and informational displays accompanying them. If you’re heading to Duluth to visit relatives or just for a different kind of vacation, then be sure to stop at the museum and learn about a phenomenal part of Minnesota’s history.

It’s no secret that the Vikings are an enormous part of Minnesota’s history and that these people still permeate the state’s cultural identity today. Holding steadfastly onto the Viking traditions and ways of life, The Nordic Inn Brew & Bed offers visitors a taste of all things Viking. A little known fact about The Nordic Inn is that the establishment used to be a Methodist church.

Located in Crosby, Minnesota, people come from miles around to sample the popular Scandinavian styles brews that have made the inn such a famous place. Around the inn—especially at the bar—you’ll find plenty of old Viking attire. Why not don some and get in the spirit? If the traditional garb isn’t enough of a taste of the Viking way of life, you’ll also need to trade your wholesome American dollars in for Kroner—the traditional currency of the Viking people.

Founded and manned by Steinnar Elmerson, you’re sure to receive the best treatment possible. He offers Viking tales and jokes of the adult variety, yes, but he also cooks an amazing amount of food, even if you’re eating alone. Signature dishes include meat and potatoes, as well as side dishes and, of course, pie for dessert. Combine this with some of the pale ale that The Nordic Inn is famous for, and you’ll have a meal fit for a (Vi)king.

No two rooms at the inn are the same, making them great conversation starters. There are only five rooms available, the neatest perhaps being the room in which a bed is built directly into a Viking ship.

If you’re looking for an experience that’s vastly different from that of a regular hotel or a normal bed and breakfast, then give The Nordic Inn a try!

If you’ve never been to Minnesota and are planning to go, plan your trip around the Minnesota State Fair, which is normally held over a week every August. Drawing in thousands of people each year, this enormous event is one of the best ways to learn about and experience the culture in Minnesota. Some of the most popular items at the fair include butter sculptures, Pronto Pups, which are similar to a corn dog, and the log rolling competition, among other things.

Dubbed “The Great Minnesota Get-Together,” the Minnesota State Fair has been providing unique looks into what makes the state so great since 1854 (which is five whole years before Minnesota even became a state). The fair takes place in Falcon heights, which is right in the middle of Minneapolis and St. Paul, and is the second largest state fair in the United States, second only to the Texas State Fair.

Because of the sheer size of the Minnesota State Fair, it’s nearly impossible to see the entire thing in one day. If you’re having troubles deciding what to see, take a look below for some ideas.

The Princess Kay Butter Sculpture: When the winner of the Minnesota Dairy Princess Program Pageant is chosen, “Princess Kay” is the title she gets, but she also has a 90-pound block of butter sculpted to look just like her. This is one of the most popular fair attractions.

The Space Tower: If you’re one who loves scenery, try taking a ride to the top of this 340-foot tall tower for the best views of St. Paul and the Twin Cities. Don’t forget your camera!

The rides at Adventure Park: If you want the standard list of fair rides, you’ll find them on the Midway (and Kidway for the youngsters), but if you’re in the mood for something a little different, stop at Adventure Park. There you’ll find like the Ejection Seat—a ride where you’re strapped into a seat secured with bungee cords and sends you flying through the air.

In the recent election runoff for governor in Minnesota, Democrat Mark Dayton and Republican nominee Tom Emmer waited anxiously for the results to come in. A recount had to be administered from votes across the state, and in the final draw Dayton came out ahead of the competition. His lead was so slight in the beginning that officials felt a recount was in order. This meant that 2.1 million votes had to be gone over again. The recently released results from the 87 counties within the state come a month after the election was held. The recount results were not dramatically different from the original election night results, leaving only a slight difference in the 9,000 vote lead that Dayton had over Emmer.

Emmer has served three terms as a member of the state legislature. He gave his concession speech, politely conceding the win for the Democrats and stated that he would not challenge the results further in a court of law. He showed support for Dayton by saying that keeping a governor out of office any longer would not be beneficial to the state as a whole. He recognized that the people of Minnesota have made their final decision and he respects that. This type of situation is nothing new in Minnesota, as a recount had to be done in the 2008 election.

Mark Dayton, at 63 years of age, served a single term in the United States Senate. He chose at that time not to run for reelection. His first attempt in 1998 to run for the governor’s seat was unsuccessful. In the 2010 election, he finally found his niche when he took both the primary and then succeeded in winning the general election. Minnesota can now look to the future as their new governor takes office, hoping that he will be able to work with the government in bringing the economy back up and creating more jobs.

Germans came to Minnesota for a wide variety of reasons near the middle to the end of the 19th century. They were seeking freedom from political pressures, freedom to practice religion without persecution and to escape military conscription. The political scene in Germany at this time was extremely unstable, with the constant changes in the government and its policies. This drove many to come to the United States to find land and the opportunity to start a new life, with Minnesota as one of their many destinations. This country had land in abundance and heading west meant new opportunities.

The land that many Germans chose to settle on was already inhabited by a variety of Native American peoples, including the Dakota, Cheyenne, Lakota and Cree tribes. These areas had been annexed by the federal government under treaties which were often broken. This is particularly true in the case of the Dakota land, where broken treaty causd the tribe to rise up and fight back, leading to the United States and Dakota War of 1862. This tribe was later removed from the area and placed at Fort Snelling.

Settlement societies cropped up in the Minnesota territory, advertising to encourage more Germans to come to the United States and celebrating the many advantages they would find when they arrived. This caused a crop of new immigrants, most of which were German. They could buy land within the territory for four costs ranging from $2.50 to $8.00 per acre. Today, the areas they settled in lie in the southern part of the state and includes such towns as Gibbon and Sleepy Eye. They also settled predominantly in the counties of Gibbon, Winona, Nicolett, Benton and Morrison.

Bringing their culture with them along with their families, these German immigrants have left a strong legacy behind for us. Their story is still relevant today, and speaks of the courage and new lives that they fostered in this state.

Minnesota offers its residents and visitors a wide variety of weather throughout the year, especially during the winter months. The northern section of the state reaches freezing lows in January, and enjoys a constant layer of snow from December into the midst of March. Temperatures are slightly milder in the southern part of the state during winter, with a high of 25 degrees on most January days. The summers can carry highs in the eighties and lower seventies when you are near Lake Superior.

Minnesota’s weather history has shown extremes in temperature and precipation totals during the winter. One such event is the great snowfall that occurred in St. Paul during the 1880 to 1881 winter season. The event started with a modest 10 inches in late October, ending with a high near 140 inches that lasted from March into early summer. Having eleven feet of snow surrounding your home for that period of time must have been interesting to live with. This was later called “The Great Snow Winter.”

Along with receiving significant amounts of snow, Minnesota also had periods of extreme dryness in its history. This happened in 1829. The event was laid out in records kept at Fort Snelling. The months of May and June received only eight total days of rain the entire time. The summer came in with record heat, and this continued on into the winter, with no snow in sight. Then the temperatures plummetted in February when a series of two week lows hit the state, with numbers as low as – 20 and – 30 degrees.

The weather could also hit extremes on both ends of the scale, with little to no rain in June of 1863 to deadly frosts that attacked crops in July and August. Throughout its history, Minnesota weather has challenged the residents of this state. But it has also helped to build a hardy character into the people who live here.

The state capitol, located in St. Paul, is the center of Minnesota history. The first meeting held by the legislative body was done in St. Paul in 1849, starting out in a timber built hotel. After a fire in 1881, another structure was built, but the legislature outgrew this one quickly. Finally, in 1893, funds were set aside for a new capitol building, designed by Cass Gilbert. When construction began on the new building, the state itself was a young one, having only been in the Union for 37 years.

The work began on it in 1896, and was finally finished in 1905 for the princely sum of $4.5 million. Gilbert has built many other famous buildings in the United States, including designing the United States Supreme Court building and the Woolworth Building. He brought the same quality and grace to the new Minnesota capitol building. On the outside, the dome is constructed of white marble and granite. The statue atop the dome is made of copper, with a gold leaf exterior. Winding down from the dome is a stairway that is able to support its own weight.

The inside is a myriad of stone, with 20 various kinds used in its construction. Those walking its halls feel an airy space with the high vaulted ceilings. Throughout the structure are numerous beautiful art works and intricate detail in each room. This is due to Gilbert’s personal attention to both the construction of the building and the outfitting of the interior. When finished, it drew positive praise nationwide from numerous architects and artistic types.

It has a total of three floors, housing the Supreme Court, chambers for the House and Senate along with offices for the governor and his or her staff. It still stands today, waiting for visitors to stroll through its halls and enjoy its stunning beauty.

Minnesota has a rich Native American heritage, which can be discovered at Pipestone National Monument located in Pipestone. The park is the site of a rich quarry of red pipestone, which was used by local tribes as a medium for carving peace pipes. These items were very precious to the individiuals who had them, for they were held to carry prayers through the smoke up the Great Spirit. The park showcases the process of making these pipes for visitors, giving them a glimpse of the past.

Visitors can see demonstrations of local Native Americans carving the pipes, they work their creations right before your eyes. The pipes are made using traditional techniques, and the carvers will explain the process to you. You can also watch the stone being taken out of the ground. The workers use the same hand tools and techniques from past times.

If you want to explore the park, you can explore the Circle Trail, which is about a thirty to sixty minute walk. The path is paved, starting at the visitor center and circling back around. Along the way, you will see various areas that have been marked as critical to the area’s history. These include quarry sites, Winnewissa Falls and long strolls through tallgrass prairie. In order to use the trail, you have to get a pass from the visitor center. It is open throughout the year, but may close in inclement weather.

There are also sites to have a picnic and just to enjoy the view. The Three Maidens picnicking area is located near the road going up to the visitor center. There are restrooms and plenty of places to eat. Inside the visitor center you can attend a ranger given presentation, visit the many exhibits and watch various demonstrations. Pipestone National Monument is a fascinating and unique place for you to enjoy, and should be on your vacation checklist.

Brett Favre recently suffered a serious sprain in the shoulder of his throwing arm, taking him out the Viking lineup. It occurred during a game versus the Bills, when he was tackled by linebacker Arthur Moats. He was taken out and came back to the bench during the seond quarter, where he watched the rest of the game played out. The final score was 38 to 14 in favor of the Vikings. Tarvaris Jackson came in to finish out the game for Favre. At the age of 41, he has seen 20 full seasons within the National Football League and is now faced with a serious injury at the age of 41.

An x-ray done on his shoulder showed no signs of broken bones. He was put on the bench for the rest of the game, as he would be unable to effectively perform with the injured shoulder. Favre is no stranger to injuries, however, and has stayed in the game despite elbow issues with tendinitis, broken bones in his ankle and having his chin split open during a game.

He stays strong in supporting the team until he is cleared to play, taking part in game huddles and asserting the need to get back onto the field. Favre has been a strong force for the Vikings, especially in 2009 when he had 33 touchdowns and seven interceptions. In his career, has played consecutively in 15,000 games.

Though he has been watching practice on the sidelines, Favre should return to the turf on Sunday, according to the team. So far he has missed two practices due to continued shoulder pain. The team has had numerous other teammember injuries to deal with, and have a defensive end, cornerback and safety who are contending with various issues. The team is confident of Favre’s return, and stated that a decision will soon be made.

When anyone thinks about Abraham Lincoln, they often do not make a ready connection to Minnesota’s past. In reality, Lincoln did make an extensive contribution to the state while also sharing a few surprising ties to its history. Minnesota first came into the union as a state a mere two years before the 1860 presidential election kicked off. Lincoln was the very first president that the residents of the state got to vote for.

As president, Lincoln provided a legal impediment to encourage immigrants from overseas to bring their families West to settle and start their new lives. This was done when he signed into law the Homestead Act, which provided land out west at an affordable price. Once in place, people flooded into the plains and the frontier, including Minnesota, to establish farms, businesses and set up new communities. This was very critical for the state to gain a position within the United States.

When the Civil War began to boil in the East, Lincoln put out a general call for volunteers to join the Union Army and stop the separation being pushed by the Southern states. Young men lined up to join, quickly filling the ranks with ready volunteers. As a new state, Minnesota was the very first one to volunteer its own young men for service in the war, showing its fierce loyalty to a unified America.

As the bicentennial of Abraham Lincoln’s birthday comes near, the state plans to celebrate its own connections to this great historic man. Activities throughout the state center on past events such as the election of 1860, exhibits of historical artifacts and also tours of historic Fort Snelling. These events will give people the flavor of the time period and help them to understand the interesting connection between Abraham Lincoln and the state of Minnesota.

Minnesota is home to a variety of Native American cultures. One tribe, the Anishinabe, number as the third largest in the continent of North America, and have played a huge role in the history of the state. The tribe is distinguished both for its crops of wild rice and their skill in constructing canoes. Their name, Anishinabe, means “first men,” but they are more commonly known here in the U.S. as the Chippewa. Their home territory was located primarily in the region of the Great Lakes, of which Lake Superior was the most populated.

The other main tribe in the state is the Dakota, which means “friends” in their language. They may also be known by their other common name of the Sioux, which is derived from the way that French explorers and traders in the area spoke their name. Within the Dakota nation, there are three separate groups: the Nakota, Lakota and Dakota. They lived primarily in the northern section of Minnesota and also along the shores of the Mississippi River in its upper portion. The divisions occurred over time and each group went its own way within the territory. Though separated, they still remained binded together as a group.

In the past, relations with the United States were very strained as treaties were often made and broken with regularity with the tribes. The Dakota were especially rebellious against government interference in their lands and lives, eventually rising up against it. This led to the U.S.-Dakota War that occurred around 1862. They eventually lost not only their land but were also forced to move to allow settlers to come into the area.

Today, these tribes are still present in the state and live on federally protected lands known as reservations. Here, the generations continue to preserve their culture and heritage by passing it on to their children.

Minnesota’s history comes alive when you take a walk into the Minnesota History Center, which is located in St. Paul.

With the recent snow storms blanketing parts of the country with heavy snowfall, flights, travel and football games are being negatively impacted. Minnesota has not been immune to this weather, especially with the recent heavy snowfall that has impacted the Metrodome. The weight of more than 17 inches of snow over the course of the storm became too much, causing the stadium roof to collapse. The snow fell in sheets onto the astroturf, falling from a hole in the roof. The seating around the stadium, as the team stated, would have been missed by the falling snow and debris.

This event happens at a critical juncture in the team’s future at both the stadium and in Minnesota. There has been recent talks of moving the team to Los Angeles, and the team has to make a decision regarding the lease on the stadium, which is set to end next year. This incident also helps to settle a longtime call for a new stadium, which they have asking for over the last ten years. If the Vikings do stay in Minnesota, this recent disaster may help their cause.

Right now, cleanup efforts are in place to get the stadium back into operable condition for the game against the Chicago Bears that is set for the December 20th. The panel for the stadium still has to have three panels replaced so that the roof can be fully repaired. The biggest issue in getting a new stadium is the six billion dollar deficit that the team has to deal with. The effort is currently underway to get public support for the new stadium.

The total cost for the new stadium is estimated at $700 million dollars, which the team has promised to pay one-third of. They are having some difficulty finding the support they desire, but remain determined to be successful.

Minnesota is feeling the punch of old man winter as snow, sleet and freezing rain pound the Twin Cities. As blizzard conditions hit Minneapolis and St. Paul, the Minnesota Department of Transportation has declared that no road travel should be planned here for the time being. Highway 50 and 52 were closed toady, along with County Road 20 located in Dakota County. The weather has reached such levels that the roads are currently undriveable.

The snow coming down is now beginning to drift, creating further hazardous conditions due to strong winds. Those out and about will feel temperatures dipping into the lower single digits to around zero degrees. Though the state is not new to rough winter weather, this storm is planning to put a crimp into many travel plans. When you consider what blizzard conditions are, you have to have two conditions met for over a three hour period. The first characteristic is strong winds that blow over a sustained period of time at a speed at or greater than 35 miles per hour. The second is to have visibility at or below a quarter of a mile because of snow.

A blizzard doesn’t always carry the promise of several feet of snow when it comes through. It can occur even when snow isn’t falling from the sky. When the winds reach the right speed, then they can pick up snow that has already fallen and whip a good storm in no time. That is why Minnesota is experiencing blizzard conditions, and with the low visibility and high winds, many more roads may become impassible with time. Motorists heading out on the road in a storm like this should drive slower, give yourself extra time and carry emergency supplies in your car. These should include a blanket, extra clothing, flashlight, non-perishable food and a first aid kit. This helps you be prepared for the worst winter has to offer.

The Midwest is still reeling in some areas from the massive snow that has hit, Minnesosota getting its fair share well. The total when the snow left is around 17.1 inches, enough to make things difficult for those who will have to get to work this week. Though roads in most areas are mostly clear, the Minnesota Department of Transportation still warns drivers to be cautious. Some roads may be icy as melted snow turns back into ice with freezing nightly temperatures.

This storm has got winter going early in the state, and has a unique way of doing it. As it came in, it moved from the northwest towards the southeast, moving quickly and bringing in plenty of moisture. St. Paul took a beating, and cars could be found abandoned along roadways as drivers despaired of digging them out. Minneapolis faces a huge obstacle in trying to clear city streets of the immense snow drifts and accumulation.

Some residents had their health impacted when trying to dig themselves and their vehicles out. These ranged from minor frostbite to heart attacks, keeping hospitals busy throughout the night during the storm. The situation was made worse by strong winds that reached up to sixty miles per hour. This caused the snow to drift and become tightly packed together.

On city streets, there were over a hundred buses stranded on city streets that were snow packed. The airport was packed with visitos when 100 flights had to be taken off the schedule due to the weather. This storms tops out in total snowfall as the fifth largest, which makes for an interesting beginning to the Minnesota winter. City officials in the Twin Cities are working hard to help residents get out from under the snow and get city streets clear for traffic.

Minnesota sports a number of long distance trails for outdoor lovers, many of which tie into the State Trail System. They take hikers through some of the most beautiful and rugged country that the state has to offer, making for an unforgettable experience.

One trail to explore is the Canyon Valley Trail, which runs 19.7 miles through a wide variety of country. The trail recaptured unused trails from the Chicago Great Western Railroad. While hiking, you can walk right alongside the Cannon River and take in beautiful views from several points along the way. You can also do a variety of other activities on the trail, including skateboarding, roller blading and bicycling. In the winter the trail is perfect for cross-country skiing. To ski on the trail, you must have The Great Minnesota Ski Pass.

Another favorite in the state is the Superior Hiking Trail, running a staggering 227 miles along Minnesota’s North Shore. The trail starts in Duluth and goes all the way up to Canada’s border. You can choose to either take a day trip out on the trail or backpack along the way, stopping to camp. The trail sports 82 different camping areas in the backcountry, which you can use without a permit for free. If you take your pet along, it must be on a leash.

The Red Jacket Trail runs from the Minnesota River and through area covered with natural prairie. This trail was also built on former railroad tracks. There is a park located along the way, with a covered area for a relaxing picnic. Canoers can launch their canoe at one point for an enjoyable ride down the Le Sueur River.

Whatever your particular taste, there is a trail within the Minnesota Trail System for you to take. They offer scenic views, challenging hiking and multiple activity choices for your enjoyment.

Winter brings on frigid temperatures that can often go below the zero mark in the state this time of year. This causes residents to turn up their thermostats, putting their heaters to work. A safety issue can be created for many who have installed a more energy efficient heater. These heaters are designed to be vented to the outside of a home, bringing in new air to the system. This is critical for the proper functioning of the furnace during this busy time of year.

The snow storm that dumped 17.1 inches of snow on the state recently creates a problem for homeowners with these type of furnaces. When snow drifts against the house, it can often bury and block these vents, removing the supply of new air that is being brought into the furnace. This creates a build-up of carbon monoxide, which can be extremely deadly to those living in the home. Most furnaces of this type have an inner sensor that detects the presence of carbon monoxide and shut themselves off. Sadly, there are some models that don’t.

There are a few safety tips that homeowners can do to help prevent this kind of problem from occurring. The first is clear the area up to three feet around the vent. This reduces the chance of getting blocked, but must be examined periodically to make sure it’s clear. You should also install carbon monoxide detectors in your home and make sure that they are in good working order.

When you have finished removing the snow from around the vent, you can know its working properly when any snow around the vent is melted off. By keeping on top of these safety issues, you can keep your family safe this winter and protect them from potential exposure to carbon monoxide poisoning.

Preserving history can be a daunting task, especially when you are doing so in a struggling economy and with little funding. Minnesota is the proud home, though, to a group of dedicated people who have been recognized nationally for their efforts. Throughout the state of Minnesota, various small historical societies give a labor of love to keep the state’s history alive for future generations. They also work to preserve and protect the artifacts and stories behind them that make history come alive for the general public.

For example, when you are traveling in the state, make sure that you stop by the Bartholomew House located in Richfield. This home was first built in 1852, and is a true testament to the pioneer spirit. The historical society that works with the house has taken a more professional focus, carefully documenting the area’s history. They also are being picky here about the artifacts they choose to display and how they are presented. This is what has drawn the attention to their efforts and many others in the state nationwide. For example, many of these societies within the state have won a whopping 10% of grant funding awarded by the American Association for State and Local History.

These societies have also targeted getting the oral history of each particular area by visiting local residents who have lived through it. Their stories are recorded professionally and also documented in writing, which is critical as many of these people pass away on a regular basis. This really shows the dedication that these Minnesota residents have to making a permanent record of the state’s history.

They also bring people on who have training in writing grants and who can promote their efforts to the public. With these efforts, some societies have even doubled their annual budgets, but many others still struggle.

Over the past few years, many states have struggled to keep their budgets in check and jobs on the rise. Minnesota has been no stranger to these obstacles, and some cities are having to make tough choices to keep tax revenue coming in. In many areas, economic conditions have caused property values to drop on homes. Despite the lower value that these homes are being assessed at, residents may still have to pay a higher property tax.

Recently, many cities have put forth a proposal to raise property taxes to bring in more revenue to local budgets. Minneapolis is one of the cities, and have opened the doors to the public to get their input on the proposal. They are in for a tough time, as many residents are extremely upset over the proposed raises in taxes. They may have to come up with a compromise in order to get things done.

Taxpayers are grouping up in defiance of the measure, one being called the Minneapolis Tax Payers United. This group is vehemently opposed to any raise in the amount of property taxes that have to be paid and plan to publicly protest against the measure. One reason many are upset is that there are possible plans to put limitations on money that is set aside to help refurbish local neighborhoods. The Minneapolis City Council is willing to hear opinions before a final vote is given on next year’s budget.

This may be a common scenario in many local areas as city officials struggle to regain the lost tax revenue from the struggling economic situation. Similar to the compromise that President Obama recently made with Congress in order to get legislation passed, city officials may have to find themselves doing a similar dance. This will help to keep the balance between those who are struggling to pay taxes and those requiring the additional revenue in order to keep things functioning.
